52 Cameras: Week 30 part 2 — Zenit TTL

I like this camera. I’m going to try to find the Helios 44M lens. The 44-2 is really sharp but I kept forgetting to turn the stop-down ring before hitting the shutter button. I lost a few photos because I took them at f/2 and they’re irretrievably overexposed. The 44-2 can go on another Zenit that has a broken stop-down ring.

I haven’t gotten the meter working yet. The corrosion travelled up the wire so it’s going to take a disassembly of the top, rewiring, and maybe a new CdS cell.

I got into a time crunch (as usual) so I had Walgreens process and make a CD. The scans are lower resolution and have a bit of noise but they’re enough to work with for web-sized images.

52 Cameras: Week 29 part 2 — Canon SX280 HS

Sadly, my lovely guest host caught whatever crud hit me last week. As a placeholder of sorts, I do have one photo she took with the Canon.

Calla Lily (Zantedeschia aethiopica) - ISO 125, f/3.5 @ 1/60 sec.

When she feels better, I’ll update this post.

As promised, some more results photos.

Ilford XP2 Super 400 black and white film. Scanned at 4800 DPI, millions of colors, and converted back to B&W in Photoshop. Resized to about 12%.

None of the flash photos came out. I think the sync is off – the flash is over then the shutter opens or the shutter closes and then the flash goes off. Still, I got 10 exposures. That’s better than I expected.

I came upon a couple of ravens eating a rabbit. Every time I got close a car would come by and scare them off. Finally, one of them would just fly over to see if I was still there. Silly, but a fun way to spend a quiet half hour.

I may try again with this camera. I got a Polaroid back for it but I didn’t get the viewfinder frame or the .3 diopter lens. The frame is easy to work around but if the light doesn’t hit the film at the right distance, which sits further from the lens in the Polaroid back, nothing will be in focus. B&H Photo has the adapter but it costs way more than the camera is worth. We’ll see how much a piece of equipment sitting there without being used nags at me.

Every now and then…

Apple spellcheck decides something is spelled wrong and won’t let it go.

Why do something simple and boring like “your” when you can suggest:

Gour
n. 1. A fire worshiper; a Gheber or Gueber.

Also a “a type of speleothem in the form of a stone dam” according to Wikipedia.

Apple spellcheck, don’t be such a Gueber.

I did some post-processing in addition to resizing and cropping. The first roll I scanned. They were really grainy from the old film. The second roll I had scanned as part of the processing and it has a lot of sensor noise. I don’t know how to describe it but you can see the difference between grain and noise. I’ll rescan the negatives and do a comparison.
